Reunion

#282
Source material: Window shade, bad inkjet printout.
The following 12 images were all created from photos taken during a recent family reunion. This and #281 come from a view through a window shade looking out at trees. The overlay is of a bad injet print, and it's the interaction of positive and negative layers that got things going.

#281
Source material: Window shade, bad inkjet print.
The text in this one kind of illustrates itself: a long tale; too long to fit.

#280
Source material: Kaweah Lake, block print borders, Photoshop type.
The lake shot is blurred in the camera, as it was interesting to see how "painterly" the photos could be with no manipulation in Photoshop.

#279
Source material: Wood siding.
Salvaged wood on my cousin's studio created organic and regular patterns that caught my eye. An unaltered photo except for exposure levels.

#278
Source material: Wood siding.
Same as above.

#277
Source material: Wood siding.
Same as above.

#276
Source material: Lake surface.
While others swam, I caught glimmers of light dancing on the surface of the water. This is also an unaltered photo.

#275
Source material: Grain storage.
Traveling down I-5 and Hwy. 99 in California, these intriguing structures were captured at 75mph. Another unaltered photo. I love what chance compositions can be. I was watching the road as I snapped the shutter.

#274
Source material: Grain storage.
Same as above.

#273
Source material: Oak tree, Photoshop type.
My cousin's house is nestled amongst a grove of oaks. Walking under their canopy felt sacred and profound.

#272
Source material: Japanese jacket, train rust and graffiti.
The shimmering fabric caught my eye (see #271) and I like how it contrasts with the splash of paint from the train.

#271
Source material: Japanese jacket.
An unaltered photo but for levels, color and saturation to get my really bad photo to look more like what it did in real life.

Line of View

#270
Source material: MGM Grand Las Vegas, Ashland Peace Fence fabric
The mystery and simplicity of the distorted perspective of this glass box, further distorted by a wind-damaged plastic tarp, stopped me from pursuing (for now) the direction I had originally planned to go.

#269
Source material: MGM Grand Las Vegas, Ashland Peace Fence fabric
Ditto.

#268
Source material: Grand Canyon, Idaho cloudscape
Not too far from the decadence of the Strip is one of the most holy places I've ever been. This piece I did in memoriam to a man who died two years ago, but I only just recently became aware of his passing. A gentle man of the land.

#267
Source material: Grand Canyon, honey locust bean pods, oil drill chart, letterpress blocks
Continuing from last week, I created a grid to go over #266, and after fussing with the values as a black and white image, I turned off the desaturation layer and found this to be far more intriguing than its BW version. Getting the balance right first in grayscale really helped the dynamics of this piece.

Barge (Continued)

#266
Source material: Grand Canyon, honey locust bean pods, oil drill chart, postscript print error, forest fire
It has been exciting to continue exploring in black and white, and while I could not resist turning off the adjustment layer that renders everything in grayscale when I thought the image was complete, the results were not nearly as intriguing as the BW. The following images in this week's post were all created in RGB with the top layer being the grayscale adjustment, so there was a lot more interaction between layers, but I was always looking at them as BW during their creation.

#265
Source material: Oil derrick, checker wrapping paper, Japanese cloud/wave pattern
The normal 90 degree pattern was severely warped to give the vaulted ceiling feel.

#264
Source material: Honey locust bean pods, oil drill chart, postscript print error, accounting ledger
I look at these bean pods every day, as this arrangement by Ann sits high above my monitor. I can't believe that it's taken me this long to use it.

#263
Source material: Honey locust bean pods, Idaho cloudscape, illiterate eyechart, letterpress blocks, dicycle
I love how digital collage equalizes everything so that I can easily combine flat graphics with three dimensional illusions.
